Post subject: Can't Play DFX on new hardware  PostPosted: Jan 01, 2006 - 07:26 AM

I just upgraded my computer with a new motherboard, CPU and memory.
Most programs seem to run fine, but I am having trouble with DFX.
When I load in the game, the menus loose there background, and I manage to get into the game, the graphics are all messed up.
One time when I tried to play, the ground was missing. I could walk around but I couldn't see any ground.
I upgraded to an EPoX Motherboard with AMD Athlon 64 3200+ and 1GB DDR 400 memory.
I am currently running Win98.
I could really use some help, I miss playing the game!
Thanks,
Thoran

Hi Thoran,

What other games do you run on the computer? Are any of them having problems? My guess would be that you *may* have to check for updates to your motherboard drivers and BIOS, and possibly for a video driver update. If you are using the drivers that came with your current set-up, it is possible that newer drivers may have came out since the mobo and video card were boxed up. And, it's possible that you may need new updates for the mobo and video cards to play nice together. You might want to check the manufacturers websites for your mobo and video card and insure you have the correct drivers to mate them all together. I had similar problems with JO and DFX when I first got them, but resolved the issues with a mobo, video card and sound card driver undate(s).

I am working on the udates for everything.
I was wondering if there would be an advantage if I upgraded from WIN98 to WINXP(Home,Pro or 64)?
I know that I would be able to run NILE instead of MED.

Windows XP is the best windows OS produced to date. (I've had Windows since it's "demo edition" in version 1.0) So far, I've owned XP Home; XP Professional and XP Media Edition. (The Media Edition is XP-Pro with multimedia add-ins). For gaming, any version of XP seems to work fine. But, I would go with the XP Media Edition for all-purpose use, as it has its primary goal of supporting multmedia and games. And, XP-ME is XP-Pro at its heart, so you have a good OS for other functions and purposes.
Just my opinion.

I have been trying to do some tweeking of different setting to try and get things to work right.
My video card says to set AGP/Graphics Aperture Size to 4MB, But the bios only goes down to 32MB.
Any input on this information, could this be part of the problem?
Thanks,
Thoran

The Aperture Size afaik sets the limit how much RAM is used. The card does not use this anyway. I do not know any game using this AGP feature. 32 MB should work. I would try a higher OS and/or reinstall the game.

I have installed WIN XP Pro, and things seem to be working OK for now.
