It could be ... many reasons .......... not just a hard drive failure.

Was your computer making any noises before the 'Death' ...... The tell tale signs of a dieing hard drive.

As always ..... the first thing to check .... is your Bios settings ...... maybe your battery has died ...... and as such ..... the Bios settings have reverted back to default.

Can't say I've ever ran into the problem, have you tried booting from the operating systems disk. then again if Drive is trashed, then the drive is trashed, Good thing is Drives are relatively cheap,

I worked on a Vista computer about a month ago for a girl she never went on line much and the pc was about a year old (HP-laptop)
What started her problem( I think) was she went online for a few hours.. She had "Not Knowing" stopped the windows updates several times in those 2 hours by opening and shutting the lid as she worked or not..

It had system failure notices popping up and going blue and shutting down.

I finally got the pc online and let it do a stack of vista updates and it has worked ok since.

May have nothing to do with your problem but I thought I would throw it in the hat so it may help..........Good Luck.............

It would be good ... if you had a spare HARD DRIVE ....... then you can just pop that in to see if the bios picks it up ....... if it doesnt, then it could be the bios .....

or put your hardrive in another computer to see if that works.

Hard drives normally make some noise before they die ........ not always ...... but most of the time.

was the bios settings correct ........ have you tried the auto detect hard drive function in the bios ....... or enter it manually ..... the details will be on the side of the hard drive.

However ..... the next step ..... should be to see if the hard drive is working ....... so borrow a friends PC and swap the hard drives over .......
