Bacon-Wrapped Burgers with Caramelized Sweet Onions (#1083)

This twist on the beloved burger is a reminder that simple accompaniments can take taste to new heights.

Bacon melds with beef on the grill, while the onion topping cooks to a mouthwatering sweetness on the stovetop.

To speed preparation, thinly slice the onions in a food processor.

2 tablespoons olive oil
2 large yellow onions (about 1 lb.), thinly sliced
1 1/2 lb. ground beef or lamb
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 green onion, thinly sliced
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 slices bacon
4 sandwich buns

1. In heavy large skillet, heat oil over medium heat until hot. Add onions; cook 10 to 12 minutes or until soft and golden brown, stirring frequently.

2. Heat grill. In small bowl, combine ground beef, ketchup, green onion and salt. Shape mixture into 4 (4-inch) patties. Wrap 1 piece bacon around outside of each patty; secure with toothpicks, if necessary.

3. Place patties on gas grill over medium heat or on charcoal grill 4 to 6 inches from medium coals. Cook 12 to 14 minutes or until no longer pink in center and bacon is crisp, turning once. Remove toothpicks. Place burgers in buns; garnish with onions.
